However, most of us do not know how to properly care for our Ankara pieces. Many a good outfit has been ruined due to lack of knowledge about just how treat your Ankara material. 1. Hand-wash your Ankara fabrics.

When washing your Ankara material, go for the manual option (washing with your hands).     2. Add salt to your wash water.

The chloride in salt serves as a very good colour retainer when it comes to coloured fabrics. Adding about two tablespoonfuls of salt to your wash water will help your Ankara material maintain its bright colours for a longer time. Add the salt in plain wash water, stir until it dissolves and put in your Ankara material for washing. This is a very effective tip.

    3. Iron at a moderate heat level.

We all know that too much heat can tamper with the colours on a clothing material. So it goes to say that when ironing your Ankara fabric, go easy with the heat. Otherwise, over time, your fabric will take on a duller, less appealing appearance.

    4. Don't leave your Ankara out in the sun for too long. 

Just like the point mentioned above, exposing your Ankara to the heat of the sun for long hours will reduce the colour quality of your fabric. It is advisable to bring your clothes in once they are dry, and not so many hours after.

    5. Don't wash with detergents.

Detergents contain strong chemicals for fighting stains and dirt. However, these same chemicals can attack the colours on your Ankara fabric, stripping them away and leaving you with a faded mess. Instead, opt for a good laundry soap for your Ankara material as this will be a lot milder and gentler.
